Interesting Conversation with Squeak Carnwath

Great interview with painter Squeak Carnwath discussing art, making art, life and making a living as an artist. One of my favorite painters. Worth the time to read this.

An Exhibit to See in Pasadena

laguna shoreline

The PMCA proudly presents a survey of more than one hundred twenty works drawn from the oeuvre of the celebrated painter Wayne Thiebaud. With his penchant for dazzling sunlight and high-keyed color, and a gift for painterly, sensuous handling of oils and other media, Thiebaud's paintings link high art with popular culture while conveying a sunny optimism that is quintessentially Californian. Although he is best known for his vibrantly colored paintings of bakeries and delicatessens, the artist has also specialized in Northern California landscapes, San Francisco cityscapes, and colorful beach scenes. A variety of these paintings will be on display along with prominent drawings and rarely seen figurative works spanning his career.

Headed back to camp

Knee High Peelers

Baja Sur

Back from three weeks in San Juanico, Baja Sur, 1000 miles from Los Angeles. Empty landscape. The desert spreads its arid fingertips towards the ocean, bringing with it hot dry air. The ocean is a twinkling blue energy that takes me in and washes away all concerns of dry land.
Escapism at its very best.

Slip into the blue......glide out, disengage from land.
Movement takes hold of your body and the flow of the water pushes you down the line. Speed builds and the energy of the wave expands upon you, engaging you to express yourself. Aware of every move, the subtleties of your weight, the movement of your feet. Cross stepping towards the nose, a quick release and there you are balanced in a state of perfection, perched like a beacon, held at the edge. Move backwards, quick foot steps and you are cutting back, stretching towards the breaking wave, readjust your weight, dig your rail and begin the quick climb back to the dance again....

Meditations on Patterns

June, 2007
Working on a series of new paintings that explore pattern making. The use of dots, dashes make for a meditative experience. Monochromatic colors or varying pastel. I am interested in evoking a contemplative state that speaks of landscape, a sort of map making. Exploring new worlds of color and pattern.
